What is a non-return valve (NRV) and where is it used in UAE plumbing?
A non-return valve (NRV), also called a check valve, allows flow in one direction only and closes automatically when flow reverses. In UAE buildings they are mandatory at booster pump outlets, hot-water cylinder inlets, floor risers in high-rise buildings, and wherever two supply sources meet. They prevent water hammer, contamination, and pump damage.
Can the NRV be installed horizontally or vertically?
Most MT swing-disc NRVs can be installed horizontally or in vertical upflow. Vertical downflow installation is not recommended for swing-check types — use a spring-loaded piston NRV for downflow service. Always check the product datasheet for the specific model's approved orientation.
Are these NRVs suitable for UAE desalinated water?
Yes. MT NRVs use DZR brass bodies with EPDM or NBR seating. DZR brass resists dezincification caused by the low mineral content of UAE desalinated water — the same reason DZR brass is required by DEWA and Dubai Municipality specifications for potable-water pipework.
